Validation of Clonical Applications of Nursing Diagnosis for Developing a Nursing Information System

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to validate clinical application of 98 nursing diagnoses identified by the Korean Nurses Association as a component of nursing information system to develop based on the results.
Data was collected in two steps. In the first step, data was collected from 114 nurses who had over 8 years of experience as head nurses and over 3 years of experience as staff nurses in 3 university hospitals in Seoul. In the second step, data was collected from 183 hospitalized patients in a cardiac center.
The results of this study were as follows
1) Among the 98 nursing diagnoses, the number of nursing diagnoses suitable for application (those with over 50% approval) to patient care was 93 in hospital A, 89 in hospital B, and 61 in a cardiac center. This thus means there is a limitation to the application of nursing diagnoses to patient care without consideration of the size and characteristics of the hospitals.
2) Among the suggested 61 nursing diagnoses that were suitable for application, there were 5 nursing diagnoses that were not utilized in practice.
3) 25 nursing diagnoses could represent 80% of patients¢¥ nursing problems when the additive rate of application of 60 nursing diagnoses was calculated basd on the frequency of selection. 3) Less than 5 nursing diagnoses were utilized per patient.
4) Signs and symtoms of nursing diagnoses that were selected at least once totaled 442 among 779(56.7%).
5) Related factors and characteristics of the nursing diagnoses that were selected at least once totaled 322 among 653(49.3%).
